Literature Competition 2005
"The work of Alexander Cordell - and the passion for the valleys around Blaenavon that he displayed in his writings - is clearly a continuing inspiration to others. I am sure that the Cordell Writing Competition can now go on to become on of the premier writing prizes in the UK." wrote Frank Barrett, then the Travel Editor The Mail on Sunday, and Judge for Alexander Cordell Travel Writing Competition.
So started the promotional leaflet for the 2005 competition. Competitors were asked to visit Cordell Country and to create an article about one or more of the many sites in the area that inspired Cordell. "In the Wake of Iestyn Mortimer" by John Davie explored the possibility of travelling on the canal from Llanfoist to Newport, and back, and having a day in the town - as Iestyn Mortimer is said to have done in Rape of the Fair Country. This is a fun exploration of fact verses fiction!!
