This Sweet & Bitter Earth

Set in the Rhondda Valley and the Aber Valley near Caerphilly, the hero of this novel is a young miner from North Wales who comes to find his fortune in the ‘black gold rush’ of the booming Rhondda Valleys in the early 20th century. A backdrop of the Tonypandy Riots of 1910 and the Universal Colliery disaster of 1913 sets the scene.

"of all the valleys, this, I thought, was surely Welsh best. Where exists such loveliness as my Rhondda in springtime? the mountains are sylan here, the country gold.... the rivers milk, the sky honey. God knows why excile Welshmen search the ends of the earth when Heavan is on their doorstep." This Sweet & Bitter Earth
