Cordell's Books

During his career Cordell wrote about many places and subjects, but the main inspiration for his work came from Wales, where his best novels were set. His Grandmother was Welsh and he had a passion for the people and the places of the Principality. His work is characterised by references to locations and landscapes many of which can be visited today.

The Welsh Trilogy:

  • Rape of the Fair Country, set in Blaenavon
  • The Hosts of Rebecca, set in rural Carmarthenshire
  • Song of the Earth - set in the Vale of Neath, Aberdare and Merthyr Tydfil

Novels of Wales: a trilogy:

  • The Fire People, set in Merthyr Tydfil
  • Land of My Fathers, set in Merthyr Tydfil
  • This Sweet & Bitter Earth - the Rhondda and Aber Valleys

The prequel and sequels to Rape of the Fair Country:

  • This Proud & Savage Land set in Carmarthenshire and Blaenavon
  • Land of Heart's Desire set in Maesteg and Swansea
  • Beloved Exile set in Blaenavon and Carmarthenshire.

Each of his books shows a different aspect of life in South Wales, from the upheaval of the industrial revolution to the turmoil of the early 20th Century.
